Does Hemp Clothing Get Softer With Wear?
CULM · 27 Aug 2026
Hemp clothing can become softer and more relaxed with wear and appropriate washing, but the change is not identical in every garment. Yarn, weave, fibre blend, fabric weight and finishing all influence how the cloth develops.
Why can hemp feel firm when it is new?
Some hemp fabrics begin with a dry or structured hand-feel. That can come from the fibre itself, the way the yarn is spun, the density of the weave or the finishing process. A firmer first touch does not tell you how the cloth will feel after repeated wear.
How does wear change hemp fabric?
Movement, washing and use can help a suitable hemp cloth relax. Creases may become more natural, the surface may feel less rigid and the garment can take on the character of the person wearing it. The extent of that change varies by product.
Should I wash hemp more often to soften it?
No. Wash a garment when it needs washing, and follow its care label. Over-washing can shorten the useful life of clothing regardless of fibre. If a product needs a particular temperature, cycle or drying method, the garment-specific instructions should take priority over generic internet advice.
Can hemp blends behave differently?
Yes. A hemp blend combines the characteristics of more than one fibre, so drape, softness, shrinkage and care can differ from a 100% hemp cloth. This is one reason CULM treats fibre composition as essential product information.
What is the best way to judge a hemp garment?
Look beyond the fibre name. Consider the cloth, construction, fit, care instructions and how the garment is intended to be worn. A material becomes meaningful when all of those decisions work together.
