What Is Bamboo Fabric? Fibre, Viscose and Process Explained

“Bamboo fabric” can describe textiles that begin with bamboo, but the phrase does not always tell you what fibre-processing route was used. Many soft bamboo textiles are made by converting bamboo cellulose into a regenerated cellulosic fibre such as viscose or rayon. Other routes exist, including mechanically processed bamboo fibre, but they produce different materials.

For a clothing buyer, the important question is not only “Is this made from bamboo?” but also “What is the actual fibre, and how was it produced?”

Is bamboo a natural fibre?

Bamboo is a natural plant feedstock. But when bamboo cellulose is dissolved and regenerated into a new fibre, the resulting textile belongs to the broader family of regenerated cellulosic fibres rather than being simply equivalent to a mechanically extracted plant fibre such as hemp or flax.

This distinction is useful because a feedstock name and a fibre route describe different things. CULM prefers to name both when the information is available.

What is bamboo viscose?

Bamboo viscose is regenerated cellulose made from bamboo-derived pulp using the viscose process. The plant provides the cellulose feedstock, while chemical processing converts that cellulose into fibre that can be spun into yarn.

The resulting cloth is often chosen for a smooth, fluid hand, but the final performance still depends on yarn, knit or weave, fabric weight, blend and finishing.

What is bamboo lyocell?

Lyocell is another regenerated-cellulose fibre route. Bamboo can be used as a cellulose source for some lyocell fibres, but the word “lyocell” describes the fibre process more precisely than the word “bamboo” alone. Process recovery systems and supplier evidence matter when a brand makes specific claims about how that fibre was produced.

CULM does not use terms such as “closed loop” as generic decoration. Such language should be tied to the actual supplier and process evidence.

Is mechanically processed bamboo different?

Yes. Mechanical processing aims to retain plant fibre more directly rather than first converting the cellulose into a regenerated fibre. The resulting material can have a different hand and production route. Because several very different textiles can all be described casually as bamboo-based, product-specific terminology matters.

Is bamboo fabric sustainable?

No single answer applies to every bamboo textile. Growing the feedstock is only one stage. Pulping, fibre regeneration, chemical recovery, energy, transport, dyeing, finishing, garment durability and end of life all influence the overall picture.

A responsible product description should avoid using the speed of bamboo growth as proof of the impact of the final garment. The processing route has to be part of the conversation.

What should I look for on a bamboo clothing label?

  • Look for the actual fibre terminology and percentage composition.
  • Check whether the material is viscose/rayon, lyocell, mechanically processed fibre or a blend.
  • Do not assume the feedstock name explains the process.
  • Look for supplier or process evidence behind any specific environmental claim.
  • Follow garment-specific care instructions.
