Bast Fibres Explained: Hemp, Flax, Ramie and More

Bast fibres are plant fibres obtained from the fibrous layer associated with a plant’s stem. Hemp, flax, ramie and jute are well-known examples. The term describes where useful fibre is found in the plant; it does not describe one universal fabric texture, production method or environmental outcome.
Bast fibres matter to CULM because hemp sits at the centre of our material direction. Understanding the wider fibre family makes it easier to see why plant source is only the first chapter of a cloth.
What does “bast fibre” mean?
The stem of certain plants contains long fibrous material that helps provide structure. Textile production separates and prepares these fibres so they can be spun into yarn. Depending on the plant and process, stages can include harvesting, retting or other separation methods, decortication, cleaning, fibre preparation, spinning and weaving.
The exact route is important. “Plant-based” does not mean “unprocessed.” Every textile involves decisions between the field and the finished garment.
Which textile fibres are bast fibres?
Common bast fibres include hemp, flax—the traditional source of linen—ramie and jute. Nettle and other stem fibres can also be used in textile contexts.
These materials belong to a broad botanical and structural family, but they are not interchangeable. Different plants, fibre lengths, extraction routes, yarns and finishes create different cloth.
Is cotton a bast fibre?
No. Cotton is a seed fibre that grows around the seed of the cotton plant. It is a natural plant fibre, but its location in the plant and its processing route differ from stem-derived bast fibres.
This distinction is one reason the phrase “natural fibre” covers a much wider range of material behaviours than it first appears to.
How does retting relate to bast fibres?
Retting is one method used to help separate useful bast fibres from surrounding plant material. The precise method and conditions can vary by fibre and supply chain. Water, field, dew, enzymatic or other controlled approaches may be used in different systems.
A brand should not invent a retting story for a garment. If the method or location is known and verified, it can form part of the product’s traceability record. If it is not known, it is better left unstated.
Do all bast-fibre fabrics feel rough?
No. A bast fibre can be used in coarse, highly textural cloth or in a much finer fabric. Fibre preparation, spinning, yarn size, weaving, blending, washing and finishing all influence the hand.
Hemp, for example, can begin with a dry, structured feel and become more relaxed with appropriate wear, while fine linen can be light and smooth. Ramie may contribute crispness or lustre. The finished cloth—not the family name—should guide expectations.
Are bast fibres always used alone?
No. They are often blended with other natural or regenerated fibres to tune softness, movement, stability, texture or manufacturing behaviour. Blending is a design tool rather than evidence of inferior quality.

Are bast fibres sustainable?
The fibre family alone cannot answer that question. Agricultural conditions, yield, fibre separation, energy, water, processing, transport, dyeing, finishing, durability and care all matter. CULM uses material names as facts, not environmental conclusions.
What should a good bast-fibre product description include?
- Exact fibre composition and blend percentages.
- Useful fabric information such as weight, weave or hand where available.
- Verified origin or processing details when known.
- Garment-specific care instructions.
- No unsupported impact claims based only on the plant name.
