What Are Natural Fibres? A Practical Clothing Guide

Natural fibres are textile fibres that originate in nature, most commonly from plants or animals. Cotton, flax, hemp, ramie, wool and silk are familiar examples. But the word “natural” describes where a fibre begins; it does not, by itself, tell you how a fabric was processed, how a garment will perform, or what its environmental impact will be.
For CULM, that distinction matters. A useful material description should tell you more than a category name. It should help you understand the actual fibre composition, the cloth, the construction and the care required by the finished garment.
What are the main types of natural fibres?
Natural textile fibres are usually grouped by source. Plant fibres include cotton, hemp, flax, ramie and jute. Some are taken from seeds, while others come from stems, leaves or other plant structures. Animal fibres include wool, cashmere, alpaca and silk. Their structure and behaviour are different from plant fibres, even though both groups are described as natural.
There are also mineral fibres found in nature, but these are not the focus of everyday apparel and should not be treated as interchangeable with plant or animal clothing fibres.
Are all plant fibres the same?
No. Even fibres taken from similar parts of plants can create very different textiles. Hemp, flax and ramie are all commonly described as bast fibres because useful textile fibre is obtained from the fibrous layer of the stem. Cotton, by contrast, is a seed fibre.
The fibre source is only the beginning. Fibre preparation, spinning, yarn size, weave or knit, fabric weight, dyeing, finishing and garment washing can all change the final hand, drape and appearance.
Does natural automatically mean sustainable?
No. “Natural” and “sustainable” are not synonyms. A natural fibre can still involve significant farming inputs, processing, energy, water, transport, dyeing and finishing. A material also has to be considered in the context of durability, care and useful garment life.

How do natural fibres feel?
There is no universal natural-fibre feel. Linen can be crisp or softened. Hemp can be dry and structured or relaxed depending on its construction. Cotton can range from dense canvas to fine shirting. Ramie can feel crisp and smooth. Wool may be soft, springy, dense or coarse depending on fibre and processing.
If you are buying clothing, the exact composition and fabric construction are more useful than the broad phrase “natural fabric.” A 100% fibre cloth may behave differently from a blend, and two fabrics with the same fibre percentage can still feel different because of yarn, weave and finish.
What is a natural-fibre blend?
A blend combines two or more fibres in one fabric. For example, hemp may be blended with cotton, linen or a regenerated cellulosic fibre to adjust softness, drape, strength, surface character or manufacturing behaviour. A blend is not automatically better or worse than a single-fibre fabric; it is a design decision that should be judged against the garment’s purpose.

What should I check before buying natural-fibre clothing?
- Read the exact fibre composition and percentages.
- Look beyond the fibre name to the fabric weight, weave or knit and intended use.
- Check the care label before assuming every natural fibre can be washed the same way.
- Look for product-specific making or origin information when it is available.
- Be cautious with broad environmental claims that are not connected to evidence.
Why does CULM focus on material information?
CULM is built around a small, deliberate wardrobe and a preference for material clarity. Hemp is central to our direction, while other natural and considered fibres are evaluated at garment level. The goal is not to make “natural” a marketing shortcut. The goal is to understand what the garment is actually made from and why that material belongs there.
