Banana fibre is a plant-based textile fibre that can be extracted from the fibrous pseudostem of plants in the Musa family. After fibre extraction and preparation, it can be spun or combined with other fibres to create yarn and fabric. The phrase “banana fabric,” however, is broad: the exact plant source, extraction route, yarn and blend determine what the finished textile actually is.

Where does banana textile fibre come from?

Is banana fibre a natural fibre?
When textile fibre is mechanically extracted from banana pseudostem and retained as plant fibre, it is a natural plant fibre. But a finished fabric may still be blended with other fibres, so the garment composition label is the correct place to confirm what is actually present.
A product marketed around banana fibre should not lead you to assume it is 100% banana fibre unless the composition states that explicitly.
How does banana fibre fabric feel?
There is no single banana-fibre hand. Depending on fibre grade, preparation, yarn construction, blending, weave and finish, banana-led textiles can range from firmer and more structured to smoother or more flexible fabrics.

Is banana fibre the same as abaca?

A garment or supplier should name the actual fibre source where that information is known rather than treating all Musa-derived fibres as interchangeable.
Is banana fibre sustainable?
The answer depends on the actual supply chain. Using pseudostem from an existing agricultural system can create a use for material that might otherwise have limited value, but that alone does not establish the impact of the finished textile. Collection, extraction, water, energy, drying, transport, spinning, blending, dyeing and finishing all matter.
